"He cares so much. I never met any one like him. His staff is also wonderful."
A dental implant is a permanent and natural-looking prosthetic tooth. It is comprised of a titanium post that’s implanted into the jawbone to serve as the tooth’s root, and a tooth-shaped crown, made of ceramic or porcelain, attached on top. Today’s crowns are so perfectly contoured and color-matched to your natural teeth that are hard to visibly discern any difference between the two.
Missing teeth should be replaced not only for aesthetic reasons but the benefit of your overall oral health. When missing teeth are not replaced, it sets off a chain reaction of problems. The underlying jaw bone deteriorates. In addition, neighboring teeth move to fill in the gap, causing teeth to become misaligned and your bite out of balance. When this happens, opposing teeth start to extrude out of their sockets. These shifts create spaces where plaque accumulates, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Dental implants have a success rate of over 90%. They’re easy to care for too, requiring only the same twice daily brushings and daily flossing as your natural teeth. With proper oral hygiene and routine professional cleanings and check-ups, implants can last a lifetime.
Implant surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and often mild sedation as well. The process typically entails three visits to Implant Center of Brooklyn. At the first, Dr. Mikhli will surgically implant a titanium post under your gum, flush with the jaw bone. The second appointment is typically 3-6 months later after the post has fused with your jaw bone. During this visit, Dr. Mikhli pulls back a small portion of gum tissue to reveal the top of the post and affix an abutment onto it. The abutment sticks out past the gums and is used as a connector to secure the crown to the post. With some types of implants, the post and abutment can be installed at the same appointment. Once the abutment is in place, Dr. Mikhli makes a mold of your jaw. The mold is sent to a dental lab where your crown is custom fabricated to match your natural teeth. In the meantime, a temporary crown is installed. At the final appointment, 2-3 weeks later when the gums around the abutment have healed, your permanent crown will be attached.
